Project Highlights

Joe Merola & the Garden of Allah tells the extraordinary true story of a man whose life intersected with the American Mafia, Batista-era Cuba, Fidel Castro’s Revolution, international narcotics trafficking, U.S. intelligence operations, and investigations surrounding the Kennedy assassination.

From Pittsburgh’s criminal underworld to Havana’s casinos, revolutionary arms smuggling, undercover operations, and the CIA’s covert war against Castro, Merola moved between worlds rarely explored together through the life of a single individual.

Reconstructed through years of original investigative research, the story draws on declassified FBI and CIA records, government investigations, firsthand accounts, and private archives - connecting people, events, and relationships long scattered across separate historical records.

Synopsis

After serving as a Marine during World War II, Joe Merola returns to Pittsburgh determined to achieve the American Dream. His ambitions draw him into organized crime and eventually to Miami Beach, where the Garden of Allah motel on Biscayne Bay becomes a base for his involvement in arms smuggling to Fidel Castro’s revolution.

But when Castro takes power, Merola finds himself on the opposite side of the revolution he helped arm. Working with anti-Castro forces and the CIA, he navigates a dangerous world of organized crime, covert operations, and unholy alliances.

Moving between governments, gangsters, and revolutionaries, Merola becomes valuable to powerful interests - but in a world built on secrecy and betrayal, his connections offer no guarantee of protection.
